Endovenous Laser Therapy Q & A

What is endovenous laser therapy?

Endovenous laser therapy is a state-of-the-art varicose vein treatment that uses laser energy to heat, close, and seal your varicose veins. The treatment closes your varicose vein, and over time the blood drains out of it. Your body then absorbs the blanched vein tissue.

At the same time, your blood is forced to move through healthier veins as it returns to your heart and lungs.

What happens during endovenous laser therapy treatment?

Endovenous laser therapy is a minimally invasive catheterization treatment. After providing a local anesthetic and cleaning your skin, Dr. Brooks uses ultrasound to create a visual of your veins. He makes a small incision in your leg and threads a catheter through your veins and into your varicose vein.

When the catheter is in place, Dr. Brooks guides a thin laser fiber through it and into your varicose vein. Then, he releases the laser energy and gently draws the fiber through your varicose vein. The laser heats the inside of your vein, which forces it to close on itself and seal shut.

After treating your varicose vein, Dr. Brooks turns off the laser energy and withdraws the fiber and catheter. If necessary, he closes your incision with a stitch and applies a bandage. He can treat more than one vein during your appointment.

What should I expect after endovenous laser therapy?

You need to wear compression stockings after endovenous laser therapy. Compression stockings not only promote healthy circulation, but the gentle pressure helps your treated vein stay closed.

You should also avoid strenuous exercise for about a week, but make sure to walk around for 10 minutes a few times a day. Walking encourages healthy circulation.

What are the benefits of endovenous laser therapy?

Endovenous laser therapy effectively relieves the symptoms of varicose veins, including the ropey, purple veins, and the aching, itching, and cramping that also occur when your circulation is impaired.

The treatment is minimally invasive and provided on an outpatient basis, which means that you can go home to recover when your appointment is over, and there’s little disruption to your life. With only a tiny incision, there’s virtually no risk of scarring.
